3d Section with a plane suddenly stopped working in this project.

This is with 6.1.1 on MacOS 10.4.8
application/zip

arketype,

The 3D Section tool is not working with the plane because it is an Extrusion with zero height, which is technically bad geometry.

You can correct this by deriving a face with the Face topological level and the 2D Surface Derivative tool or by re-drawing the object with the 2D Surface modifier.

Funny, mine says it has an extrusion height of 4" and shows up not as a "line" but as a plane. Setting the extrusion height to a new value extends the extrusion, but the tool still errors out.

The tool does not appear to be working properly at all.
Using the section tool, when I click on one of the solids, and then click the plane to perform the section, the plane highlights, and nothing happens.
It's as if it is waiting for a third input click.
If i click a third time I get the error:
System was unable to complete the generation of an object
ID=0.8

I have found a workaround, but I wanted to report this issue, as it seems to be intermittent. I tried a section with a simple cube and plane in a new project file and the tool works as expected.

Hopefully this can be investigated further.

arketype,

The 3D Section tool is not doing anything because the plane is not a 2D Surface, which is what is required (and expected).

If you turn on Show Face Normals you will see the problem. The "plane" has two faces at the end with zero area. This is improper geometry and will not function for the 3D Section tool. The Object Doctor can be used to correct the problems.

How did you create this Extrusion object?

Yes Object Doctor fixed it.
I always forget that tool is available. Very useful.

This was created very simply in front orthographic view by drawing a straight line with the extrusion modifier.

I'm not sure how this could have generated the bad geometry.

Thanks for the help

arketype,

We have determined the bad extrusion was caused by the line being doubled back onto itself. There are a couple ways this could have happened. One is by drawing the line with 2 mouse clicks, and then one more back at the starting point. A second possibility is by triple clicking on the second point.

If you use a regular Plane or Line, then the Section will work properly.
