I am trying to install spiral stairs connecting the first and second floors of my building. I have started with an octagon using the 3d topology of a walled building. I am trying to create a space in the second floor that incorporates a 270 degree circle opening that allows you to look down onto the spiral stairs. I can't seem to do anything that will accomplish this. If I use a rectangle, a semi-circle or an arc with a chord when I use the reshape icon I get an opening that does what it is supposed to. Why then can't I get the 270 degree circle to do the same? Thanks for your time.

John,

If you create an extruded 270 degree solid object and Difference from your floor, does this give you what you want?

I have tried the difference tool and all it does is ghost the 270 degree extrusion which I want to make a hole in the second floor. If I use insert opening under the tool options I can get all the shapes in the draw tools to make an opening in the second floor, but when I introduce the 270 degree circle it will extrude away from the second floor, but it won't extrude into the floor. I have tried to draw a 2D image and then use the reshape tool to make it 3D but that doesn't work either. The other thing I have tried is to extrude a cylinder and choose the 270 degree option under closure but, again, it will only extrude away from the second floor, not into it. I'm stuck!

you should post a fmz.zip file that contains the two objects you are trying to difference so you can get help...

John,

Yes, as Robert suggests you should post the file. You may also want to check your geometry with the Object Doctor to see what issues exist -- and if they can be automatically fixed with that tool...

John,

We understand what you are describing, so we do not need a picture.

What we need is the formZ (.FMZ) file so we can check your geometry and see why you are having trouble. Please save and zip your file that contains the two separate objects that you are not able to Difference so we can see why.

I'm not sure I know what you mean. Where do I find this formz file? I thought the picture I sent contained the separate objects that I want to difference.

Copy the two objects into a new formZ project.

From the File Menu, choose Save.

Zip the file that you just saved, and attach that...

I can't get them to copy. The copy tool is not highlighted.

Pick them and choose Copy from the Edit Menu?

John,

These objects do not intersect. Move the cutting object so that it does intersect and try again. In case it helps, here is the file where we have moved the object, and an image of the result:

application/zip1
objects to difference2.zip (167.7 k)

I don't know how to get the images intersected. That's part of my problem. The 270 degree top object will not extrude down into the octagon. I clicked on the image you sent and nothing shows up.

Sorry, an image did show up and you have done exactly what I want to do. How did you do it?

John,

Images do not intersect, but if you go to a Front view and move the objects up or down so they do intersect (overlap), then you should be able to do the Difference and cut one from the other.

See the file that we posted (and the ghosted objects that were used).

EDIT -- Bob -- please be nice!

Click on the file to download it.

Once the file is downloaded, double click on it and it should unzip.

Then open the Objects to difference2.fmz file with formZ...
