For Architect Sebastian Nuesslein, form•Z is the control center of his design projects

German Architect Sebastian Nuesslein belongs to a breed of avant-garde designers that merge the virtual with the physical as he envisions fluent spaces where cars and other products can be exhibited. He creates his designs using form•Z and he recently shared how form•Z is an integral part of his success in our most recent user spotlight.

Herr Nuesslein says: “…what I really like about form•Z is that it is so ‘permissive’ in building all sorts of solid geometry and shapes. Of course, on top of all this, what I really love about form•Z is that I have a tool that inspires me and I enjoy using…” “…the application has become the ‘control center’ of my projects. That is, it offers me the ability to keep on using the same tool from the early conceptual stages all the way through the stages where construction drawings are produced and a project is actually being built.”

Designing for 3D printing with form•Z jr and form•Z pro

When the UP Box printer was first announced 3D Printing solutions CEO Mike Tyson knew he had to find a project that would utilize the larger build area of this new 3D Printer. “The first thing that came to mind was a 3D printed Guitar!” Here are his experiences on this project. To create the 3D Design we used form•Z jr 3D Design software. Why? "We find form•Z really easy to use and it exports to perfect stl files ready for your 3D Printer. I am completely hands on with all aspects of the business. If we sell it has to be good enough for us to use. Like most users I tried all the free 3D Design Software. Pretty soon I got sick of only being able to do limited things in any one software product and having to import the design into multiple pieces of software to create what I needed.

form•Z free is proving exceptionally effective for beginning fabrication students

When we were considering the introduction of form•Z free as a reduced version of form•Z, our expectation was that it would popularize 3D modeling even among lower and middle school students. To our delight it is working great as a general introductory modeler and it is proving especially effective in the newly popular area of digital fabrication. Here is the story at one of the highly ranked design schools.

The Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD) has been part of the form•Z Joint Study Program (AutoDesSys' academic lab and class licensing program) for more than 20 years. Professor Brad Jirka has been the Principal Investigator from the beginning and form•Z has been an integral part of their design curriculum ever since. He recently provided very insightful feedback on how the MCAD has integrated form•Z. Using two levels of form•Z applications, form•Z quickly and seamlessly produces exceptional results with the latest fabrication and 3D printing technology.

Webinar: Generative Design

Add a new unique twist to your 3D design using the generative tools in form•Z as we demonstrate the voronoi diagram, delaunay triangulation, point scatter, surface scatter, volume scatter, wrap and parametric map modeling tools. These tools have practical and theoretical applications in a large number of science and technology fields and have very desirable artistic characteristics. We’ll see how they can be used together along with other form•Z tools to generate complex organic forms and design structures in a fun and intuitive way. You’ll also see how these forms are fabrication ready such as 3D printing. Any design professional who wants to enhance their design to include a variety of spawning, scattering, cell diagram and parametric map based form generation will be interested in this topic.

Victor Martinez does it again with Tomorrowland

Conceptual Designer Victor Martinez has been a user of form•Z for a long time and it has always been a pleasure to feature his work as we hear about some new undertaking that broke new ground in digital concept design. In 2003, we covered Martinez’s work on Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi noire thriller Minority Report. Soon after that, the L.A. based freelance designer was busy using form•Z to develop some remarkable sets for a number of notable films, including Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events (which won the award for Excellence in Production Design for a Period or Fantasy Film given by the Art Director’s Guild, and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Art Direction), The Terminal (which won the Art Director’s Guild’s award for Excellence in Production Design for a Contemporary Film), and The Cat in the Hat. In 2005, we featured a step-by-step guide through the creation of a very unique and challenging set used for The Cat in the Hat, which was, in his own words, “Probably the most interesting set I’ve worked on to date.” That was in 2005. Since then, there have been many more challenging projects, which we admittedly have difficulty keeping up with. Here is a partial list: Transformers, Terminator Salvation, Real Steel, Transcedence, Oz The Great and Powerful, Avatar, Star Trek Into Darkness, etc. His latest, the mega-production Tomorrowland, released very recently, gave Martinez one more opportunity to design props and to invent forms of a highly futuristic quality. William Francis Gates (Assoc. AIA, NCARB, LEED G.A., ASID, BA Phil., March NAAB) is a Professor at The New York Institute of Technology and also a Principal at the Architecture Making Studio in New York City. He has recently been invited to design the newly envisioned gardens on the site of the United Nations in Manhattan.

The United Nations Food Gardens is a volunteer initiative that will establish small-scale food gardens and fruit-bearing trees on the UN Headquarters property in mid-town New York. The designs incorporate raised beds, an area for wild flowers and a kiosk with seating and shade.

The UN Food Gardens will provide opportunities for staff, delegates, and other members of the UN community to grow and share vegetables, herbs, and fruits. The gardens will also provide opportunities for inter-cultural social interaction, knowledge sharing, and inspiration for staff and visitors from around the world.

“I have used form•Z exclusively throughout the design of the gardens and it has been a wonderful tool that has helped me produce a beautiful design that has been very warmly received by the UN Community”.

The UN released a short video that features a number of images produced with form•Z and Maxwell Render and several short animations, also created with form•Z. The video can be viewed through the UN Food Gardens Web Site and also in the YouTube link below:

FiELD9: architecture blog: my CAD Story, 3D

In a recent blog post, matthew.StanFiELD discussed his process of choosing a modeler and why he chose form•Z over SketchUp. He writes: "I eventually ended up going with Bonzai3d [now form•Z jr] for several reasons. One, it is a much more robust modeler than SketchUp. The toolset is larger. The tools are more powerful. In short it promised to be able to do a whole lot more than SketchUp." Read the story here.

Giorgio Borruso’s latest creations with form•Z

This is not the first time that AutoDesSys is featuring Giorgio Borruso’s work. He is a form•Z power user for over 10 years and the subject for his design accomplishments in publications globally. It is hard to stay away from the opportunity to display some of his newest creations and observe the evolution of his organic shapes that seem to coalesce in defiance to conventional monoliths. The Sicilian born architect who relocated to Los Angeles in 1998, invites people to step across a threshold into a realm of possibilities. “I try to build conditions,” says Borruso, “for the person that is stepping inside the spaces I design, to find a reason for moving ever forward to explore the space, to explore themselves.” Read More...

form•Z presented at the Director’s Guild of Canada

Following the visit to the Art Directors' Guild in Hollywood, last year, the Directors' Guild of Canada (DGC) extended an invitation to show the features of form•Z pro to their members. In January 2015 it was our pleasure to present the capabilities and power of form•Z to the DGC, at the Pinewood Toronto Studios. Over the course of the 2-hour presentation, all features and form.Z personalities - including reliable basic facetted modeling, intricate NURBS design, and the new and impressively fast subdivision (SubD) tools - were displayed to a highly intrigued set-design and movie-production audience. The extended Q & A session that followed, confirmed the impact the presentation had on all participants. The attached pictures of the event show the AutoDesSys presenter, Matthew Holewisnki, as well as guest speaker and form.Z power-user and renown Designer Hesham El-Tyeb from Viewpoint Presentations, whose participation was secured by our Canadian Distributor Alain Cohen.
